Abigail Spencer & Priyanka Chopra heading to the wedding church along with numerous guests

I know this is not a red carpet event, but I couldn’t help running down all the fashion we’ve seen at the royal wedding. It’s quite the historic event for the British royal family; not only is this the wedding of the grandchild of the current Queen, it’s also the wedding where the Royals are breaking their traditional mould with a lot of firsts. Meghan is an American who is also a divorcee; back in the day the Prince’s great uncle had to abdicate the throne and renounce all his titles to marry his love who was an American divorcee as well, but that was 82 years ago, definitely something of the past.

Not only that, but Meghan Markle is now the first member of the royal family with African American heritage who was an actress as well before marrying Harry. The wedding was overfilled with American actors and celebrities instead of heads of state from all over the world – much to the Queen’s distaste, we think. Otherwise, why was she so grim?!

The Queen is not amused

Historical changes aside; we’re here to talk fashion. So let’s get to it.

Best dressed

Lady Kitty Spencer in Dolce & Gabbana

Princess Diana’s niece in D&G dress

My heart stopped when I saw this look! The epitome of elegance, this one. The socialite dazzled in an emerald green ensemble by Dolce & Gabbana with floral patterns. I love how she paired the bag and shoes in the same burnt orange hues as the flowers on her dress. Ankle-length dresses are very hard to pull off, but she did it ever so perfectly while topping it up with a Philip Treacy headpiece. The elegant small hat featured a teardrop veiled calotte with a hand-sculpted knot in parasisal, feather quill and spines, and Swarovski crystals.

Lady Karen Spencer in Pamella Roland

Another Spencer killing it!

It’s official, the Spencers were made to have us gawk at their prominent fashion style and taste. Period. Can anyone not love that chic cropped cape?! The fascinator was just spot on, and the colour, striking in a sea of pastels and florals. And I love how she didn’t go overboard by adding nude shoes to the mix. Striking minimalist mission, accomplished!

Sarah Rafferty in Lanvin

Bell sleeves with a twist from Lanvin

Of course, Meghan Markle invited her co-stars from the Suits cast to the wedding! I’m obsessed with Sarah’s elegant sleeves here. Her sleeves were quite the statement of this navy dress, and I like how she left that as the centre of attention and kept the shoes nude.

Serena Williams in Versace

Serena Williams does no wrong.

Serena brought box braids to the royal wedding! Natural hair girls, rejoice! It’s official braids count as classy & formal now! I love Serena’s fashion statement dresses. The tennis pro showed off a blush curve-hugging Versace dress, paired with matching pointy-toed stilettos. She polished off her look with a pale pink fascinator, a statement Bulgari necklace, and a white box-like clutch bag.

Pippa Middleton in The Fold London

Nor do the Middleton sisters.

Can you believe she’s pregnant?! Her dress was quite beautiful and got me taken aback from first site. First, it’s a fresh cut; not that it’s new, but you can count on Pippa to pull off a cut that no one but her would be wearing at the wedding – yes, we still fondly remember her debut at her sister’s wedding. We love the pastel palette, and how the colour of the pint-size fascinator compliments the floral pattern.

HRH Queen Elizabeth in Stewart Parvin

She’s also the Queen of colour in case you didn’t know that already

She’s always so daring with colour. This time opting for a bright green overcoat with a touch of interesting detail down the front, and a hat with contrasting purple feathers [a very daring contrast if I do say so myself]. Her choice of green might be the reason the colour was quite popular with the Royals this wedding. Some critics said the choice of colour was due to its symbolism as a sign of respect and good intentions for the future; a subtle gesture for the progressive wedding, perhaps?!

Kate Middleton in Alexander Mcqueen

Can anyone believe she just gave birth to her 3rd child only a month ago?

Kate was as beautiful as always, the only reason she did not make it to the top 5 is that this fabulous pale-yellow number is a re-wear. Yes, she wore it twice. Once, in her daughter Charlotte’s christening, and for the Queen’s birthday. However, this is not out of character for Kate, as she does have reputation for re-wearing previous outfits. Maybe, one day, Kate will normalize the idea of re-wearing, so we don’t have to overspend for every wedding we attend. Either way, she was stunning. She did however change the hat, by Philip Treacy. I always say change the accessories and you have a new outfit.

Princess Beatrice in Roksanda Viola

A major step up from the William & Kate’s wedding back in 2011

I’m guessing that after the massive lash out that occurred in the last royal wedding, the two princesses decided to tone it down a bit for this one. Princess Beatrice even forgoed hats and fascinators for this unique headpiece. I love this embellished number, with its teal hue, and the voluminous sheer sleeves. It has the princess standing out – in a more positive light, this time. And once again, nude shoes…. Dare I say nude shoes is the new formal staple?

Doria Ragland, Mother of the Bride, in Oscar de la Renta

Doria wore an Oscar de la Renta knee-length overcoat, covered in delicate embroidery, worn over a coordinating shift dress—both in a standout shade of mint green—with a sculptural hat by Stephen Jones and Aquazzura nude heels. The unique part of her look, however, was the fact that she opted for dreads and that she wore a diamond nose ring for the occasion. Formal wear will never be the same after this wedding.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, in Suzannah

A true royal at 53

Before Middleton & Markle, minimalist fashion was Sophie’s specialty; and she rocked it with all the grace in the world. At 53, she’s still at it wearing a sky blue skirt and embellished top coordinating with a Jane Taylor hat. I love how many opted for ankle length dresses, which is the least popular dress length around.

Victoria Beckham in a design from her Spring/Summer 2019 Collection

At first glance, the dress is a sleek slash-front midi dress featuring a belted neck and split sleeves teamed with a Stephen Jones tulle pillbox hat. We love how she made this very elegant number it pop with burnt orange heels. But I’m not digging the sleeves, she seems to be wearing her arms through the splits of the sleeves rather than through the cuffs; not a nice look for a wedding. I get that she wanted to give the silhouette a cape-like effect but she could have done it better!

Priyanka Chopra in Vivienne Westwood

Priyanka’s bathing in Windor’s sunshine

I have a thing for Vivienne Westwood designs. It’s that perfect cross between crazy unique cut and elegance. That’s why I was so excited when the bride’s friend Priyanka Chopra wore this suit. The lilac hue was perfect for this spring wedding, with interesting detail in the front draping of the skirt, and she kept the look monochromatic with a matching hat by Philip Treacy. However, the outfit did seem to be a bit too figure hugging, perhaps she gained weight after the purchase?! We’ve all been there. Also, the bejeweled sandals were a touch of distaste, but that’s my opinion.

Least Favourite Looks

Oprah Winfrey in Stella McCartney

Queen of America, Oprah Winfery

I’ve been reading all over the internet the excuse of “there was a last-minute change” because she just realised that her other dress was white! Like really?! It took her till the last minute to realise that?! I’m not surprised she was trying to cover up this mistake of a dress with an excuse. The pale pink dress was just horrid, and that hat looked like she’d picked it up at her county’s local market! Sorry Oprah, you’re American royalty but this one was definitely a miss.

Camilla Parker Bowles in Anna Valentine

Camilla and nest

Camilla, like the queen, has her own dress designer, who has strived heavily to relieve the duchess from her ‘dowdy style’ reputation. We can say she’s succeeded in pushing her out of ‘dowdy status’, to the ‘scratch your head why’ status. The Duchess wore a blush, modern asymmetrical dress, which didn’t flatter her figure at all. The hat by Philip Treacy [does anyone do hats in this country other than this dude] was more like a nest of feathers than a fashion statement.

Abigail Spencer in Alessandra Rich

Suits co-star, Abigail Spencer rocking polka dots

This is sad because I actually like this polka dot dress, but it’s not fit for a wedding! Let alone a ROYAL wedding! Was Abigail out of dresses?! Couldn’t she afford an actual outfit fit for a wedding?! Has she never been to ANY formal event? Sigh, and there goes the perfect dress to the wrong occasion.

Beckham in Dior Homme

David Beckham looked effortlessly cool in his morning coat by Dior Homme. His contrasting double-breasted waistcoat is complimented by a gold pocket chain and finished off with a pair of club master sunglasses. Beckham’s trousers are tailored to a slim fit cut and finished with a classic black derby shoe. Man did he age well!

Alexis Ohanian

Reddit co-founder looked pretty dapper in a three-piece suit complete with pinstripe pants cropped to reveal red, white and blue American flag print socks.

Tom Hardy

Where’s Batman?

There were a few jokes about him looking less like himself and more like Bane, his character in Batman, but he still looks good with or without hair. He wore a classical navy three-piece suit, focusing on accessories. The standout piece is the golden, Gucci, tiger head lapel pin, along with his clubmaster sunglasses and tie pin.

Gabriel Macht

Gabriel Macht aka Harvey Specter, the hotshot lawyer on the hit show Suits, graced the royal wedding channeling his alter ego with flare and style. Wearing a dark navy morning coat over a grey vest and pants, the contrast was exquisite with a burgundy tie and geeky horned rimmed glasses. It’s touching how he and his lovely wife matched colours.
