While magic may not exist in real life, it exists in books. One might even say that books are a form of magic; you hold a bundle of pages with ink on it, and it has the power to affect your life and take you places. Reading means many different things to all of us. To show you what reading means, I asked some bookworms why they loved to read, and I hope they can inspire you as they did me.
"I love to read because it makes me feel like reality is a very far place from where I am. It makes me escape the pressure and the problems around me. Sometimes, when I hold a book for too long, the smell of its papers sticks to my hands, and I love it way more than anybody could imagine." - Rana, 14
"While reading, there are no limits; I can be whoever I want, wherever I want. I travel to worlds and meet people, it’s cheesy to say, but it’s true. It takes my mind off things and gives me a break from the loudness and troubles of the world. Reading will always be my favorite thing to do. It’s more of a lifestyle than a hobby because I read daily now." - Khaled, 22
Embarking on Adventures
"Reading represents a whole new universe with every new story you begin and every character you encounter. It offers you as many adventures as you could handle, and takes you to places beyond imagination without needing a passport or a plane ticket. Books truly have magic and a soul of their own." - Mohamed, 22
"That’s a loaded question, but to put it simply, I think it’s an exercise of empathy. You get to understand and see things from different perspectives. You get to walk in someone else’s shoes, and once you do, there’s no going back." - Mai, 23
Books as Companions
“I love reading because I had nothing except for my imagination and my books. I grew up in the ’90s, and we didn’t have the internet. Back then, being a young girl with no friends and nothing to do in the summer, books were my only companions. Reading was and still is a wonderful thing, and it helped me build up my character.” - Neveen, 32
I can strongly relate to everything my fellow bookworms just said. Reading has become more of a way of life for me. It’s a gateway to other worlds; it’s a way to experience things that I’m hesitant about or scared to do; a way to see myself in others and feel like I’m not alone. Of course, it’s a perfect way to pass time and enjoy myself. After all, what’s better than relaxing with a good book after a long, stressful day?
